Breaking Trail

An Oscar-qualifying documentary about a woman’s journey into the wilderness with dog named Diggins, that quickly became a festival favorite and was licensed to Outside TV.

The outdoors is for everyone.

As Covid-19 surges amidst ongoing civil unrest, Emily Ford sets out with a borrowed sled dog named Diggins to become the first Black woman to thru-hike the 1,200-mile Ice Age Trail in winter. As the 69-day journey through subzero temperatures tests her physical and mental endurance, Emily and her canine protector develop an unbreakable bond as they embrace the unexpected kindness of strangers and discover they’ve become figureheads in the movement to make the outdoors more accessible for everyone. What begins as a physical journey quickly transforms into a spiritual adventure.

Breaking Trail was self-funded and distributed, playing and winning dozens of film festivals, winning an award at the Oscar-qualifying Cleveland Film Festival. The film was licensed to The Banff World Tour for theatrical and Outside TV for broadcast and a digital exclusive first window.

"IT'S AN EXCELLENT BUDDY FILM. FORD IS HILARIOUS EVEN WHEN HER NALGENE IS FROZEN SOLID, AND DIGGINS HAS QUITE THE PERSONALITY. BUT IT ALSO EXPANDS ON THEMES RELATED TO FORD'S BROADER GOAL: TO FOSTER A MORE INCLUSIVE OUTDOORS.”
